The dot used in the mechanics module is a combining dot (http://www.fileformat.info/info/unicode/char/307/index.htm). This is kind of an advanced feature, especially for something like a terminal that prints characters in cells. So the fact that it doesn't work in some terminals is not surprising. If it doesn't work in Konsole, I guess you should fiddle with the settings and fonts to see if you can make the unicode work, or else file a bug report, and use something where it does work (like Gnome terminal).

Anyway, I don't think it's anything that we can fix. Does the above code work in more advanced terminals? I don't know how to reproduce it.
