Ok, so I was mistaken, it doesn't hang. I get 17 plots, which I then close, and then I get small numbers of plots, some of which appear to be identical. With patience and lots of closing of windows, it finally finished and all tests pass.
When I run bin/test test_plot on the branch from PR 1348, it passes and no matplotlib windows are brought up. I will run sympy-bot on that PR later tonight.
