OK, according to a quick search of the git tags in the numpy git, the first version to include this was 1.4.0. I can't seem to compile it, so I'll just take it on faith that that's truly the minimum version.
See https://github.com/sympy/sympy/pull/1461. If someone actually has numpy 1.4.0 installed (or can easily install it), I would appreciate it if they could test it.
