I'm not sure if it was correct to use _mpi_ as was done in that issue
(which was merged, by the way). The code expects it to return a tuple, not
an mpi, but even so, I can't figure out how to use it to convert an
Interval to an mpi.
So I think for now, I am going to remove _mpi_ and undeprecate to_mpi.
