Good news! There is an active discussion to completely remove the link
crawling behavior of pip/easy_install, see
http://mail.python.org/pipermail/catalog-sig/2013-February/005330.html. If
that happens, then only explicitly uploaded files will be downloaded, and
(assumedly) they will stop using filenames to get metadata and instead use
the PyPI trove classifiers.
