args that failed to eval were being allowed to rebuild a function and the
function didn't discriminate against them and so returned what appeared to
be a genuine value. e.g. if 0.e308 is a failed evaluation of a small
number; sign(0.e308) -> 1. That failed number shouldn't have been used to
calculate the sign, however.
