I'm sorry, I pasted the wrong summation up there. It was late and I think my brain blew a fuse due to lack of sleep. So much for "ooh I'll do the responsible thing and submit a bug report"... :\

Anyway, I meant to paste:

mysum = summation( x**n ,(n,1,M) )

Basically what I mean is that 1+x+x^2+....+x^M seems to auto-reduce to (1-x^(M+1))/(1-x), which is not true when x=1. Please let me know whether you can actually reproduce this or it was a product of my sleep-deprived imagination.
