Removing just calls to cancel() leads to performance regressions. Adding a call to cancel() doesn't, but in either case, there are test failures because it can no longer do some integrals. I also played with the cancel around line 269, and it's the same thing (performance regressions and integrals that can't be done).

Minor performance regressions I can deal with, especially if it makes this one integral work fast, but preventing many integrals that did work from working any more is problematic.
