It's pretty easy to construct examples where this gives wrong finite results:

In [57]: atan(1/(1 - x)).subs(x, 1)
Out[57]:
π
─
2

In [58]: limit(atan(1/(1 - x)), x, 1)
Out[58]:
-π
──
2
