If you use the series method -- series function should behave the same but doesn't -- and use the logx option you get

(log(x)**a*exp(-b*x)).series(x, x0=1, n=2,logx=z)
exp(a*z - b) + x*(-a*exp(a*z - b)/2 - b*exp(a*z - b)) + O(x**2)
