I am not a statistician, but looking here: http://www.mathstatica.com/examples/ I think I would be able to help you with the technical side, e.g. making sure things work in sympy. I think it would be really cool if sympy was more clever in this area and if you go for it, you have my full support. I guess someone at your department could work as your advisor related to statistics?
