The definition for [a, b] is {x in R: x >= a and x <= b}, and
automatically sorting the borders would create all kinds of annoying
little inconsistencies with that definition.
Just stick with the conventions that the mathematicians use.
In this case, they take great care to say thinks like
[x - epsilon, x + epsilon] where epsilon = abs(some expression).
Stick with that, they know what they're doing :-)
