I guess my first question would be about your mathematical background. I could better judge your ability to do things like the Karr algorithm if I knew that. Regardless, I encourage you to start looking through the issue tracker and start working on the patch requirement. It will be better to do this early than later, and it's always good to start getting a feel for the code-base.
