I would be interested in this (e.g., because it can eventually contribute to the rules mechanism). However, I'm not knowledgeable enough to answer your questions off-hand, while playing with SymPy is not that accessible to me this week because of some seminars I'm compelled to attempt. Whenever you discover something new, please report this here, so that I know where to start when I get freer in a couple days. I'd be happy to know more about SymPy's pattern matching and extend it.
