The path we usually recommend to newcomers is to start by getting
acquainted with the standard development workflow [0].  Following the
instructions on the cited page, you will be able to get a SymPy
development environment up and running.  Then you may find it useful
to take a look at the list of issues [1] and try to fix a couple of
them.  It should be more straightforward to start with the issues
marked with the label EasyToFix [2].

Whenever you have a question, don't hesitate to ask.
