One thing that you should get started on is that we require that all
applicants submit at least one patch to SymPy.  This way, we see that
you really do know Python, and it gives you a head start on learning
things like how to use git and GitHub.

The patch can be anything.  A good place to start is with our easy to
fix issues: http://code.google.com/p/sympy/issues/list?&q=label%3Aeasytofix.
 If you've never used git before, you'll probably need some help.
Don't worry, we'll guide you with any problems you may have.  There's
also a guide at
https://github.com/sympy/sympy/wiki/development-workflow.
