Thanks for all the great replies! I especially liked the solution using the stats... And the uncertainties module looks incredible; I may have to start building new projects around it where appropriate.
Not that anyone (including me) is likely to use the function I wrote, I did want to mention that I found an error in the assert statements... The __len__ attribute needs to be in quotes like '__len__'.
