This question arises regularly here. I think that the last time it was suggested it was by Matthew Rocklin. It would be nice to abstract the numpy interface in a __very simple__ wrapper for sympy. Feel free to add it to the GSOC suggestions (it may not be agreed upon or there may be no student that wants to work on it, but at least it will start a discussion)
