This discussion comes up on the other lists of course.

Numpy and scipy recently dropped 2.5 compatibility.

Of course, that does not mean that people who are using Python 2.5
can't use Sympy, just that they can't benefit from new releases.

The cost of keeping compatibility is making the code slower to write,
refactor and to maintain. So the balance, as y'all have said, is
between <development time lost> vs <frustration for people on older
systems being unable to upgrade their sympies>.

>From my numpy / scipy world, it seems to me that the switch to Python
3 is finally happening, and people are also starting to switch to
common code-bases for python 2 and 3. That is so for scipy, for
example. That is much harder with Python 2.5.

Best,

Matthew
