Good points.
So I conclude that it would be nice if somebody came up with a way to allow user-defined attributes without running into namespace conflicts. Oh, and the mechanism should be easy to use for the casual user. I have some ideas in that direction, but I'd like to see what others think first.

Independently of that, I'd like to see somebody check whether the performace impact of __slots__ is still relevant; this may have changed with newer Python versions and I'd like to have some contemporary figures so we know what the actual trade-off is.
