Though lack of mentors is a real logistical issue (I can't complain because I won't be mentoring this time). We need to recognize the fact that SymPy, like most of the other FOSS organizations has a serious lack of women participants.
I highly recommend a reading of the article "Free as in Sexist <http://firstmonday.org/ojs/index.php/fm/article/view/4291/3381>"[1] which talks about various issues which drives away women from FOSS. There is a need to explicitly work on reducing the gender gap in SymPy and programs like Rails Girls Summer of Code and Outreachy provides good opportunities to do so.
