You can solve it like this using rational or floats:

In [9]: solve(Eq((1-(x**2))**(S(1)/2), S(1)/2), x)

Out[9]:

⎡-√3   √3⎤

⎢────, ──⎥

⎣ 2    2 ⎦


In [10]: solve(Eq((1.0-(x**2))**0.5, 0.5), x)

Out[10]: [-0.866025403784439, 0.866025403784439]
