I actually think we should remove the requirement that students introduce themselves on the mailing list. It tends to lead more to spam than anything. A better way would be for students to introduce themselves in a few sentences alongside their first PR. For students who are looking for help, they should perhaps be directed to the Gitter channel (or a separate Gitter channel if that gets too noisy).
In the end, I'm not sure if we can eliminate it entirely unless we do it at the moderation level. I appreciate that the mailing list is difficult to use at this time of year, though, so I do think we should try to do something about it.
