Yeah,

I tried some things to speed up the connection as most of them didn't
cause much effect. 

How hard would it be to add this kind of functionality to the OpenSSL
library? Anything that we could help?

By my tests is Cryptlib slow itself. By OpenSSL I got much better 
speeds. (but OpenSSL not supporting SSH, it supporting just SSL/TLS)

Cryptlib is slow, because it is slow itself and because it have 'not 
well clever' API what is not optimal for use with Synapse.
