hi

is it healthy to keep an open connection to the server?
i will clarify the question:
now each time i want to make an operation on the mail server
* i open a new connection, do the operation and close it
it seems that for some servers, the connection process takes more time
than the operation itself (sending/deleting/retrieving)

is it healthy to keep an open connection (never close it manually)?
is there a timeout that an open connection is closed automatically by the
server?

* an alternative to the above process:
check if the connection is closed
if so, open it (if not, dont open it :) )
do the operation (delete/send/retrieve)
(end of process)

closing manually the connections will be done only when exiting the application

thanks
