I gave up usb serial connectors and went back to cards because of 
similar problems, and the problem disappeared.

If you use USB equipment, see if there is a correlation with machines
going into sleep states and/or devices are unplugged  (or go into sleep)

Windows 7 seems to worsten the problems by not always resetting Usb 
devices on reboot, thus requiring a true poweroff to fix the problems.

All with tcomport though.
