Jeff I don't know if it affects what you're trying to do but Google are looking for the latest level of security. It may be that the version of libeay32.dll and ssleay32 you have aren't recent enough.
Its a bit of a problem at the moment - for my mail and news client I had to find a version that was acceptable to elevatesoft & embarcadero, and yesterday to get my business app to access a gmail account I had to find the bit in gmail that tells it to accept lower security levels.
