Hello everyone,
Finally. I had a chance to tweak the announcement with
Paul ... please see final version below (and attached
as Word doco).
As far as I know, we're good to go; Paul did mention
something about a final QA cycle, however, so it might
be good to synch up for the actual time that the
release goes out on the wire. Remember that Monday, 28
May is a US holiday (Memorial Day).
Thanks again, everyone, for your help and kind
patience. Feel free to let me know if you need
anything.
Warmly,
Sally

THE APACHE SOFTWARE FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES THE RELEASE
OF APACHE SYNAPSE v.1.0
New Open Source Service Oriented Architecture (SOA)
Framework Makes Web Services Implementations Quicker
and Easier
FOREST HILL MD – 22 May 2007 – The Apache Software
Foundation's (ASF) Web Services Project today
announced the release of Apache Synapse v.1.0, the
first full version of its Service Oriented
Architecture (SOA) framework. An easy-to-use, Open
Source, lightweight XML and Web Services management
and integration broker, Apache Synapse v.1.0 was
developed to form the basis of a flexible,
standards-based Service Oriented Architecture (SOA)
and Enterprise Service Bus (ESB).
In addition to the release of Apache Synapse v.1.0
software, the Apache Synapse Project recently
graduated from the Apache Incubator to become a full
ASF Project under the Apache Web Services Project
Management Committee (PMC). This signifies that the
Project has successfully met the ASF's requirements
for developing products based on its community,
infrastructure, and licensing guidelines for
collaborative development.
Since its inception in 2005, the Project has released
a number of milestones; the release of Apache Synapse
v.1.0 is the culmination of its efforts to date.
"Apache Synapse v.1.0 realizes our vision of helping
developers build Service Oriented Architecture
solutions more quickly and easily," said Paul
Fremantle, Apache Web Services PMC Member and Vice
President of Technical Sales at WSO2 Inc. "Using
Apache Synapse, organizations can now reliably employ
Open Source without the traditionally cumbersome
development and integration process. We are pleased to
release v.1.0, enabling mainstream users to
immediately reap the benefits of Apache Synapse."
Apache Synapse aims to help organizations build
Service Oriented Architectures based on Open Source
and Open Standards.
OPEN SOURCE SOA FRAMEWORK
Using a simple configuration based approach, Apache
Synapse v.1.0 allows users to add a whole new level of
control to their existing integration links, as well
as create new links between applications, without
rewriting existing code. Apache Synapse has defined a
new model for SOA and ESBs based on lightweight XML
mediation.
"While the common pattern for commercial SOA
infrastructure software consists of fully featured,
but often complex products with underlying code from
various vintages, Open Source SOA infrastructure
products tend to be lightweight and highly tuned for
the specific job at hand," explained Jason Bloomberg,
Senior Analyst at ZapThink. "Now that Apache Synapse
is a full Apache Project, organizations implementing
SOA now have access to a lightweight, high performance
Service intermediary solution that can serve as an ESB
if necessary, but can just as easily provide
distributed intermediation as part of a lightweight,
high-speed, standards-based SOA infrastructure."
Apache Synapse v.1.0 offers a wide range of mediation
capabilities, including support for a number of open
standards, including XML, XSLT, XPath, SOAP, HTTP,
JMS, Web Services Security, Web Services Reliable
Messaging (WS-RM), SMTP and Web Services Addressing.
Apache Synapse v.1.0 supports a number of useful
functions out-of-the-box without programming, but it
also can be extended using popular programming
languages such as Java, JavaScript, Ruby, and Groovy.
MAKING SOA SIMPLE
Apache Synapse makes it really simple and easy to
manage advanced standards such as WS-Security and
WS-ReliableMessaging.
"In the complex world of Web Services, with lots of
WS-* specifications, Apache Synapse v.1.0 is a very
welcome addition," said Tijs Rademakers, Apache
Synapse Project Committer and Software Architect at
Atos Origin. "With the simple-to-use, but very
powerful Apache Synapse configuration language,
implementing functions like transformation, validation
and routing is a breeze. Even dealing with complex
standards like WS-Addressing, WS-Security, WS-Policy
and WS-Reliable Messaging becomes easy."
EASILY INTEGRATED
Because Apache Synapse is a lightweight Open Source
component, it is very simple to integrate it into
wider solutions.
"In the SOA integration space, we found that Apache
Synapse was exactly what we needed," said Michael
Clovis, Vice President of Development at Mindbridge
Software, who required a lightweight mediator for Web
Services to embed into their products. "The system had
to be able to act as an integration bus while at the
same time allowing us to build our forge site. Apache
Synapse met all of our needs perfectly," added Clovis.
"In fact, this flexibility gave Mindbridge the ability
to deploy it in all phases of its business model; our
expertise is corporate data compliance using Open
Source software. Apache Synapse met our security and
reliability guidelines, with the smallest footprint of
the products tested. Add to that an educated, helpful
user base and Apache Synapse is a winner."
HIGHLY PERFORMANT
Apache Synapse v.1.0 is one of the few Open Source ESB
solutions that offers a completely asynchronous,
non-blocking model. This means that Apache Synapse can
scale up to handle thousands of connections without
running out of threads. Apache Synapse also uses the
Apache Axiom technology to perform content-based
routing while avoiding unnecessary XML parsing.
Initial performance tests show that Synapse can
provide service mediation on standard 1k XML messages
with less than 1ms overhead on standard hardware.

Synapse website at http://ws.apache.org/synapse

About the Apache Software Foundation (ASF)
Established in 1999, The Apache Software Foundation
provides organizational, legal, and financial support
for a broad range of Open Source software projects,
including Apache HTTP Server -- the world's most
popular Web server software for more than a decade.
The Foundation provides an established framework for
intellectual property and financial contributions that
simultaneously limits contributors' potential legal
exposure. Through a collaborative and meritocratic
development process, Apache projects deliver
enterprise-grade, freely available software products
that attract large communities of users. The pragmatic
Apache License makes it easy for all users, commercial
and individual, to deploy Apache products. For more
