Thanks for your bugreport.
I can't reproduce the problem here with two ubuntu machines (one breezy, one
dapper). I clicked on various buttons, invoked various menus, did some
toolbar stuff and then installed some packages.
Can you please provide me a gdb backtrace of the crash? To do this, run (as
root):
$ gdb synaptic
(gdb) run
[make it crash]
(gdb) backtrace
