Ah, that's interesting, I didn't realize that.  I just got a WM5
phone, but I haven't plugged it in under Linux yet.

Patrick, you're not using one of the newer WM5 phones that uses RNDIS
are you?  If so I'm probably leading you on a wild goose chase with
the serial scripts.
