The problem is that I don't Python 2.4.4have that much knowledge about pyrex 
either. 
Versions in debian:  
        python-pyrex                         0.9.5.1a-1
        Python 2.4.4

I will try to investigate this, but basically the way I implemented this was 
copy&paste and try to change those things that are needed to get things to 
work.

This afternoon I might have some time for looking into this problem. 

Ian, if I send you a new pyrapi.pyx file later on, would you be able to copy 
that over the most recent svn working directory you have and test things? 
Don't want to use svn for this kind of testing.
