Firstly, there is an ubuntu package in launchpad deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/synce/ubuntu hardy main I'd recommend using that. I've actually switched to ubuntu, so my deb repo is generally a bit out of date. I would also say that network-manager is playing around with the interface. There's a workaround at http://www.synce.org/moin/SynceWithUbuntu basically you have to add a line to /etc/network/interfaces.
