I think this might not be what you intend isn't what you intend.

I guess you're thinking of when you use DESTDIR to build a package for
later installation ? In those circumstances you actually want to run
update-mime-database on the final destination _after_ the package has
been installed. In fact what I'm probably going to do is suppress
update-mime-database if DESTDIR isn't empty.

Does that make sense ?
