This is not entirely true, since sync-engine does store the data in the IDB files per partnership and per sync-type. AFAIK this file is just the python objects written to file, but John might be able to give more details on this ;) >From what I remember the syncing is done in two steps, first the device syncs to the internal database of sync-engine, which then syncs to opensync.
