But the real issue is that I made the assumption that unsupported sources are defined with empty source URIs. This is not in fact the case (except in my own configs where things worked fine). The idea is not a stupid one however and Patrick agreed we can make it so: templates should leave the source URI empty if the server does not support the source. This way user can fill in the URI if the server starts supporting it and client apps can make the source "un-enablable".
