I just tried to reproduce why it fails (step 2 in the description), it didn't trigger the 418 status. Instead the local item was merged with the server's item. Ah, that was because my two contacts slightly differed in their fields. When they are 100% alike, I get 418. I think we shouldn't treat a 418 status as error.
