To check if there's a meeting coming up, you can just look at the widget instead of having the main calendar app open all the time. If you're lucky, maybe the desktop widget will also access the calendar backend in a way that also happens to refresh the calendar app (which you say otherwise only happens on exit), but I haven't tested.
