Forums have the disadvantage that you need to visit a web site when want
to reply. In some forums you even have to poll the web site to read what
others have written. This doesn't fit into my way of working, which is
email-centric (like that of most open source developers).

That's what mailing list archives are for. We even have multiple
different interfaces so that you can pick one that you like (in contrast
to a forum, which comes with one interface that at best can be
customized to look differently).

You can use gmane as a web forum. View a message:
http://news.gmane.org/gmane.comp.mobile.syncevolution
Then use the "Follow up" option in the upper right corner:
http://post.gmane.org/post.php?group=gmane.comp.mobile.syncevolution&followup=231
