Is there a "proper" way to obfuscate email addresses in feeds in a way that doesn't destroy all meaning but does prevent (or at least minimize) collection by email address harvesters?
The story behind this question: After seeing that Opera 8 was released today, I stopped by the Opera site to download the latest browser version, and decided to poke around a bit in the "My Opera" area. I noticed that the Journals feature provides an RSS feed, so I went to Syndic8 to see if any feeds from that feature were in the Syndic8 database. I found one and reviewed it, and it failed due to validation problems. After marking it for repair, I created my own journal to see what sort of feed customization is available (not much!), and it looks like the problem is beyond control of the user. Both validation problems stem from elements that should contain email addresses but contain simple text instead. (One is the channel managingEditor element, the other is the item author element.) A "simple" way to resolve this is to have Opera change their code to insert the email address of the journal owner. However, that exposes their address to being harvested by spammers. Another "simple" way is to just omit those elements, but that reduces the amoutn of potentially useful data in the feed. So, I figured I'd ask here to see if there's a specific recommendation I can make to Opera to fix the Journal feeds in the "best" way possible.
