Initial Comment: During long renders, the red 'stop render' button in the bottom right hand corner of the canvas is (sometimes) enabled. Clicking it greys out the icon, but doesn't stop the render. The escape key is also alleged to stop a render, but does not seem to have any effect. Expectation is that for any render activity (to the screen or a file), the red button or escape key is operational and halts the render ASAP.
