Generally, we have the following workflow about branches:
1. User forks the main repository (https://github.com/synfig/synfig) to his
own. I can see you already have this done (
https://github.com/mousepawgames/synfig).
2. At the personal repository user maintains his own set of branches, tags,
etc. So you can create branches in https://github.com/mousepawgames/synfig.
3. When some branch is considered as ready to merge into main synfig
repository, you just send the pull request to us.

P.S. I haven't read the forum discussion yet. Will do as soon as I can.
Possibly I will have some additional comments - I've had an experience with
an early Flash 4 / Flash 5 scripting. ^__^
