I also have a laptop, and I do use the touchpad; I don't have a mouse
connected most of the time, but I *still* have to disable the touchpad
from the "Input devices" dialog before I can draw anything.

Did you try using the touchpad before disabling it?  Does it work for you?

I find it really annoying - synfig doesn't remember the 'disable
touchpad' setting, so I have to remember to change it every time I run
synfig.
