You have two alternatives to do that. Directly from Synfig Studio or
indirectly from Inkscape and then export from Inkscape to Synfig format. I
strongly recommend the first

Currently there is not way to insert external data to a Synfig document if
you don't use Synfig Studio itself.
Can you elaborate more this second step?
