I've used Mercurial as a package prototype repository with success so far.  
That way, even if something gets messed up somewhere, I can always check out a 
certain revision of a package, and upload it into the software deployment 
server.

Better yet, unless I've specifically deleted a certain package from the 
software deployment server, it'll let me select from different package versions.
