I personally like the idea of building any new stuff on top of snmp/net-snmp.  
Net-snmp is already common in the rest of the *nix world, Solaris already has 
it (somewhat old release), and tools like OpenNMS on Solaris (what I use) are 
pretty awesome.

I'm less of a fan of agent-based systems, such as Nagios, because they don't 
scale as well as passive snmp-based monitoring (imho).  I think you can 
integrate Hyperic agents and OpenNMS, though, for those looking for agent-based 
monitoring coupled with OpenNMS (sorry for the partial thread hijack).
