I believe what you are looking for it "netbios", which is a service that
broadcasts a box's name on the network, so that the other local systems can
find it. To make the solaris box look up names through netbios, you would
have to make changes to the hosts line in the /etc/nsswitch.conf . I don't
know if the nsswitch module for netbios is provided.

But, if you only care about the windows clients looking up the solaris box,
you can just enable nmbd (it's part of the samba project, so you might have
to install samba/nmbd).

once you install that, just enable it, and make any firewall exceptions that
it needs, if you have port filter rules running... (information on doing all
of this should be online).
