Yes, utmpx records are written - w(1) shows the user logged in via GDM, while wtmpx only has ssh and console logins.
If so, I could provide you with a test binary with GDM built so that GDM_NEW_RECORDS_FILE is set to "/var/adm/wtmpx" instead of "/var/log/wtmp". Then we could test if that fixes the problem. If that's not the issue, then I am not sure what the problem might be.
