Now - and this is just a question - what's wrong with snmp, which does remote collection from a central station?
Nothing, as far as I'm concerned. Is that project still progressing?
Why do you need a web service to collect the data together? I just copy it to a central repository and munge it off-host?
While I didn't directly talk on this (perhaps I should have), I see the web service being on a somewhat dedicated system; one that's already running a web server. (Maybe a documentation server?) I don't see, nor want, every server in a shop having a web server running. That's just ugly.
Sorry for not being clear on this earlier.
Why collect this data locally and then serve up the collected data? Why not have a kstat daemon that can be queried
Which-ever way works is fine, as long as the data is clean and available when needed.
