I know I should probably configure LDAP or NIS instead of copying /etc/passwd
around. But before jumping into that, here is the weird thing that I wish
somebody could explain:

I replaced the current /etc/passwd file with the one on the server. Both the
new and the old /etc/passwd file have "x" in their passwd section, indicating
the passwd is actually encrypted and saved in /etc/shadow, which I haven't
change at all. That's all I did, and yet somehow I couldn't assume root role
any more. How's that possible?
