Hi all,
-Internet domain names encoding-
Currently, the encoding of Internet domain names is restricted to a subset
of 7-bit ASCII (ISO/IEC 646).
Internationalized Domain Name (IDN) Working Group's working on specifying
either the requirements for 0 access to domain names, or a
standard track protocol based on requirements [IDN-REQ].
Since the HOSTNAME field, in the MSG part of a syslog packet, MUST contain
the hostname of the device, the syslog behavior will be influenced by the
introduction of IDNs.
No single candidate protocol proposal had wide agreement from the IDN working
group. However, it was agreed that the DNS protocols certainly allow non-ASCII
octets in domain name parts and resource records; (there was also
acknowledgement that many protocols that rely on DNS could not handle non-ASCII
names due to the design of the protocol).
The encoding for IDNs has not been defined yet, however we'll can represent
them in syslog packets using, likely, a base 64 encoding.
Proposal: Chris, in case they do not come soon to a standard, what about to add
a new section (maybe called 'Further Considerations') in the
next draft version, where we can address this issue?
I'll keep tuned on IDN-WG.
Sincerely,
alfonso
